Flying to Milford Sound
Is a Scenic Flight the Right Way In?
What the flight is like, the three ways to fly, Queenstown or Wanaka, what each operator does when it cannot fly, and how much of the day it gives back.
A scenic flight turns the Milford Sound day from Queenstown into a morning or an afternoon. The seven flight listings on this page do it three ways: fly in and fly out with a cruise between, ride the road in and fly home, or loop over the fiord without landing. All of them depend on the weather, and each listing says something different about what happens when the cloud stays down.
What the flight is like
Queenstown and Milford Sound are about 70 km apart in a straight line, and travel guides put the scenic flight at about 40 minutes each way. The listings agree within a few minutes: Milford Sound Scenic Flights’ itinerary shows 40 minutes each way, True South Flights includes two 40-minute flights, Glenorchy Air says 30 to 40 minutes, and Air Milford’s itinerary shows 35.
Glenorchy Air names the most along the way: Coronet Peak skifield, Skippers Canyon and the Shotover River, then up the Dart River Valley into Mount Aspiring National Park, over the Olivine Ice Plateau, Mount Tutoko and the Tutoko Glacier, and down into Milford Sound. Air Milford names the Tutoko and Donne glaciers on the way in and Sutherland Falls, which it puts at 580 metres, on a different path home. Milford Sound Scenic Flights also flies back by another route. Routes are not fixed: Air Milford says they may vary with the weather on the day.
Milford Sound Scenic Flights, Glenorchy Air and True South each promise a window seat. Air Milford flies a 12-seat Cessna with a one-and-two layout; it says the three middle seats look out of both sides. After landing, you reach the boat on foot or by shuttle: True South offers a shuttle or a 15-minute nature walk to the terminal, Glenorchy Air leads a walk through beech forest, and Air Milford’s pilot can walk you through the forest, time permitting.
Fly-cruise-fly, coach out and fly back, or flight only
Fly-cruise-fly is five of the seven. The cruise is the part that varies. Milford Sound Scenic Flights books two hours with Mitre Peak Cruises, subject to availability. Glenorchy Air’s cruise partner is Southern Discoveries, “up to 2hrs” in its inclusions and 1 hr 45 min in its description. Air Milford’s small-boat nature cruise and True South’s catamaran both run 1 hour 45 minutes. Southern Alps Air cruises the 16 km length of the fiord and, weather permitting, out to the Tasman Sea.
Coach out, fly back is Mitre Peak Cruises’ nine-hour day. A van takes the Milford Road with stops at Mirror Lakes, Knobs Flat and the Eglinton Valley, then a two-hour cruise, then a 40-minute flight back to Queenstown. It is the only option here with lunch included: a picnic with a chicken or vegetarian sandwich, cheese and crackers, chips, a slice and fruit. If you would rather keep the road both ways, coach and cruise covers those days.
Flight only is Air Milford’s Big 5 Glaciers flight: one hour in the air, 1.5 hours in all, from $337. The listing excludes a “Milford Sound landing or cruise”. It flies over Milford Sound via Mt Aspiring and names the Rob Roy, Bonar, Dart, Volta and Donne glaciers. For time on the water instead, see the cruises; for landings on the mountains, see helicopter flights.
Queenstown or Wanaka
Six of the seven leave Queenstown. Milford Sound Scenic Flights collects from 24 named pickup points and has free parking at its base. Glenorchy Air picks up from a list of hotels and has a desk inside the main terminal at Queenstown Airport. True South picks up from central Queenstown accommodation, or you park at the New World supermarket lot. Air Milford picks up from central Queenstown hotels.
Southern Alps Air flies from Wanaka Airport: across Lake Wanaka and Mt Aspiring National Park on the way out, and back via the Dart Valley and Glenorchy, about four and a half hours in all. Its listing includes the round-trip flight and a cruise, and lists no hotel pickup. The operator says food and drink are for sale on the cruise, with tea and coffee free.
When the weather says no
Rain is common in Fiordland, and small planes over the Southern Alps fly only when the weather allows. What each listing promises:
- Milford Sound Scenic Flights: “If the flight is cancelled due to bad weather conditions or operational issues, you will be given options to reschedule to another available trip or you can cancel and receive a full refund.”
- Air Milford, fly-cruise-fly: “If the flight is rescheduled due to weather, travellers can choose a full refund.” It recommends booking your flight “for your first day in Queenstown for maximum flexibility to reschedule due to weather”.
- Air Milford, flight only: “we will endeavor to offer a suitable alternative flight or a refund will be issued”.
- Mitre Peak Cruises, coach out and fly back: if the flight is cancelled, “you will return back to Queenstown via Coach and a partial refund for the flight will be issued back to you.”
- Glenorchy Air, True South and Southern Alps Air state no weather policy on their listings.
All seven allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Reviewers tell the same story. “Unfortunately first booking was cancelled, bad weather so book at the beginning of your stay,” wrote a Glenorchy Air guest from Australia. Another Australian, on the Wanaka flight: “Weather meant we missed out on the Milford cruise but we were so thrilled by the flight and incredible views that we didn’t mind at all.” Weather and cancellations covers planning around it.
The time it saves
The Department of Conservation puts the Queenstown to Milford return drive at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours, and recommends going from Te Anau instead, 240 km return and about an eight-hour day. The fly-cruise-fly days take 4 to 5 hours from Queenstown; coach out and fly back takes 9. “Fantastic experience with stunning views really worth the price to fly instead of drive,” wrote a reviewer from the United Kingdom. Cruise or scenic flight sets the two against each other, and the best way to see Milford Sound adds the walks, covered on walks and the Milford Track.
Who it suits
A flight suits a short stay in Queenstown, anyone who would rather not sit through a road day of 12 hours or more, and anyone who wants the mountains from above as well as the fiord from the water. It needs a flexible day or two, because of the weather. Check the limits before you book: Milford Sound Scenic Flights is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users, Glenorchy Air sets 140 kg, Air Milford and Milford Sound Scenic Flights 150 kg, and True South 170 kg, asking for each passenger’s approximate weight when you book.

"Andy was a great pilot and host. Kind and helpful the whole time. I would recommend him to anyone. Once in a lifetime experience."
"The plane trip was so magnificent. Beautiful sunny weather, the views were amazing. The snow on the mountains was one of the highlights. I loved seeing Milford from the air. We didn't do the cruise as the weather forecast wasn't ideal for the return journey. I still enjoyed everything. We landed and walked along the forest path to the waters edge. The water and the surrounding mountains was breathtaking."
