"Milford sound is an amazing place with epic scenery. There are many boat cruises to choose from but we really enjoyed this smaller boat. We got close to one of the huge waterfalls and were astonished by the sheer force of the water. Would highly recommend this trip."

How the Small Boat Cruise Works
Four steps, from the car park at Milford Sound to Stirling Falls and back to the wharf.
Drive In and Park
The cruise starts at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal on State Highway 94. Parking is charged in the main car park, about 10 minutes' walk from the terminal; free parking at Deepwater Basin is a 40-minute nature walk away. Disability parking is outside the terminal if you can display a badge. There is no fuel after Te Anau.
Check In at the Terminal
Meet at the visitor terminal and pick your start time when you book. Tell staff if a passenger has a disability, and they can board your party early to avoid the queue; the listing suggests wheelchair users use the terminal restrooms before the cruise.
Past Mitre Peak to the Sea
The boat leaves Milford Sound Wharf, passes Mitre Peak and runs the 16 km fiord out past St Annes Point Lighthouse, with skipper commentary on Lady Bowen Falls, Lion Mountain, Copper Point and Seal Rock. Sit in the lounge with a free tea, coffee or hot chocolate, or stand on the outdoor decks.
Stirling Falls and Back
On the way back the boat goes close to Stirling Falls, so bring a waterproof jacket for the spray. Watch for seals, dolphins and, in season, Fiordland crested penguins. The cruise lasts two hours. No food is sold on board, so bring your own; smoking, drones and alcohol are not allowed. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Choosing a Cruise
Which Milford Sound Cruise to Book
What the cruise is like, small boat or big boat, driving to the terminal and parking, the overnight cruise, the weather, and who the cruise on its own suits.
If you drive yourself, or stay in Te Anau or at Milford, the cruise is all you need to book: you park, walk to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal and check in at your operator’s counter. Here are the seven cruises sold from that terminal, from a 100-minute sailing to a night on board.
What the cruise is like
Every cruise here runs the length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea and back. Mitre Peak Cruises, the featured operator, describes the route as the 16 km fiord, out past St Annes Point Lighthouse, with commentary on Lady Bowen Falls, Lion Mountain, Copper Point, Seal Rock and Stirling Falls. The boats go close to the falls, which is why the operator recommends a waterproof jacket: you can get wet from the spray. Cruise Milford’s listing adds Fairy Falls and says its boat travels directly under them.
The wildlife the listings name is the same across operators: New Zealand fur seals on the rocks, dolphins, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin in season. Cruise Milford puts the penguin’s time around November. None of it is promised.
Small boat or big boat
The cruises split into two groups. The small boats belong to Mitre Peak Cruises and Cruise Milford. Mitre Peak calls itself the smallest cruise operator in Milford Sound and says its cruises have strictly limited passenger numbers, with outdoor decks for photos. Its sailing is two hours, longer than most here, and a reviewer from Japan noticed: “While most tours are 90 minutes, this one is 120 minutes, and the difference is that it goes a little further offshore to Cape St. Anne.” Cruise Milford’s cruise lasts 1 hour 45 minutes on a boat with lounge-style sofas, with coffee, tea and biscuits included. Its listing shows a length of “105 minutes - 12 hours” and a pickup flag, but names no coach and excludes hotel pickup; if you need transport, check the options when you book.
The big boats are catamarans with several decks. Pure Milford’s has three levels of indoor and outdoor seating, large windows and HD cameras that show outdoor footage live on screens inside. Southern Discoveries’ catamaran has a top deck for all-round views, app commentary in eight languages, and the one lunch you can add when booking, a picnic or the To Kai buffet. RealNZ’s Classic cruise (1 hour 40) uses its larger boats with app commentary; its Signature cruise (2 hours) adds guides and a licensed bar.
Between the two groups sits RealNZ’s Premium cruise on the MV Sinbad: 2 hours 15 minutes, champagne on arrival, local canapes and allocated seating, with capacity capped at 50%. It is the dearest day cruise here.
For most people driving in, the small boat is the one to book: two hours, close to the falls, and rated 4.8 from 3,144 reviews. Bring your own lunch, because Mitre Peak sells no food on board; tea, coffee and hot chocolate are free.

Getting to the terminal yourself
DOC puts Te Anau to Milford at 240 km return and suggests allowing about an eight-hour day with stops, short walks and a cruise. There are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so leave with a full tank, food and drink. From May to September snow chains “may be required”, DOC says, and you can rent them in Te Anau; RealNZ’s listing goes further and says carrying them is mandatory in winter. You may not stop between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm, an avalanche area, and in summer peaks the traffic lights at the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel can add up to 20 minutes. Check NZTA’s page for SH94 Milford Road before you leave.
From Queenstown it is 600 km and 12 to 14 hours return, and DOC recommends going from Te Anau instead. If that is too much driving, the coach and cruise days do the road for you. Driving to Milford Sound covers the road in more detail.
There is no entrance fee to visit Milford Sound in 2026, but parking near the terminal is charged: NZ$10 an hour in the main car park, about 10 minutes’ walk away, by the cruise listings. Free parking at Deepwater Basin means a walk of 30 to 40 minutes. RealNZ’s Premium listing says to allow 45 minutes to an hour to park and reach the terminal, and its cruises ask you to check in 30 minutes before departure.
The overnight cruise
RealNZ’s overnight cruise on the Milford Mariner is the one way here to stay on the fiord after the day boats leave. It departs the wharf in the late afternoon and lasts 17 hours. After the boat anchors in a sheltered cove, you go out with a nature guide by kayak or in the tender boat, or stay on deck; you can also jump off the boat for a swim. Dinner is a buffet from the on-board chef, breakfast is continental, and you sleep in a private cabin with ensuite. Drinks cost extra. In the morning the boat heads out to the Tasman Sea, weather permitting.
It costs from $393 per person and is rated 4.7 from 63 reviews. Two things differ from the day cruises: free cancellation runs to 14 days before, not 24 hours, and overnight parking carries a NZ$30 charge. Weather can change the night, too. A reviewer from Germany wrote in March 2026: “Unfortunately, we could only stay overnight on the moored ship in the harbor, but we immediately received a 50% of the money back.”
Weather
Rain is normal in Fiordland. Southern Discoveries tells passengers to be prepared for it and says wet weather sends dozens of temporary waterfalls down the cliff faces; the same listing says cruises may be cancelled for unsafe weather or maintenance. “It was pouring rain, which made it an excellent day, so many amazing waterfalls!” wrote a passenger from the United States in September. Every day cruise here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. Milford Sound weather and cancellations explains what happens to a booking.
Who it suits
The cruise on its own suits drivers, people staying in Te Anau or at Milford, and anyone who wants the fiord at water level for the least money: the cheapest cruise here starts at $81. If you would rather see Milford Sound from above, compare the scenic flights and the helicopter options, or read cruise or scenic flight. What Guests Say
"Exceptional experience, in world class destination. Many thanks!"
"I loved the size of this boat, not too big but still enough room for everyone comfortably and we were able to cruise much closer to the shoreline which I enjoyed. stopped to watch a couple of seals and got uo close and personal with a waterfall. it was a perfect day!"
"It exceeded all of our expectations, the boat was fast enough that you didn’t get sea sick, but slow enough that it didn’t feel that you were jetting through nature and disrupting it, so you could appreciate it. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly, they kept everyone safe while still being good sports. The early cruise meant we were the very first boat out there, and we got all the wild life, three penguins, and couple seals."
"Best mini cruise I’ve ever been on 10/10. And Milford Sound is just stunning! Thanks team!"
"This company do Milford Sounds fantastically well. Don’t book with the big boats, use the smaller ones as the experience is so much more personal and up close. We saw dolphins, penguins, seals and then were up close with the waterfalls. Excellent tour guide as well on the 11am boat from gate 4."
"The boat was smaller than those of other companies, but it didn't rock that much, and I didn't get seasick. While most tours are 90 minutes, this one is 120 minutes, and the difference is that it goes a little further offshore to Cape St. Anne. Along the way, we were able to see penguins and dolphins, and we also got to feel the spray of the waterfall, so we really enjoyed nature!"
"So much prefer the smaller more intimate boats. There were lots of crowded big boats but ours was so much better ."

RealNZ's Classic cruise is 1 hour 40, Pure Milford's 105 minutes, Cruise Milford's 1 hour 45 and Mitre Peak Cruises' two hours. RealNZ's Premium cruise on the MV Sinbad runs 2 hours 15. One reviewer on a big boat found the commentary hard to hear away from the speaker. Small boat or big boat compares them.
