"I loved everything about my Milford Sound Experience. The Helicopter ride was AMAZJNG, Luke was an excellent pilot and did a great job finding a spot for us to land on the glacier while also being super friendly and knowledgeable about everything. The boat ride at Milford Sound was perfect, we got the trifecta of getting to see dolphins, seals and penguins. It was so beautiful there that it was almost unreal."

How the Heli-Cruise Day Works
Four steps, from the coach pickup in Queenstown to the landing on the way home.
Coach Pickup and Safety Briefing
The listing includes courtesy coach transfers from selected pickup locations in Queenstown to the helicopter base, where a qualified pilot gives the full safety briefing. A final confirmation with your departure time comes from the operator once the minimum number of passengers is met.
The Flight Over Fiordland
You fly from Queenstown over Fiordland National Park with in-flight commentary from the pilot. The operator says its pilots work with film crews and point out places where films were shot. Flight times are approximate and can change with the weather.
Land in Milford Sound for the Cruise
The helicopter lands at Milford Sound and you join a scenic cruise on the fiord, past cliffs and waterfalls. The listing says to look out for dolphins, seals and penguins. Bring sunglasses and a camera; drones and selfie sticks are not allowed.
A Glacier or Alpine Landing, Then Queenstown
On the flight back the helicopter lands on a glacier or at an alpine site for photos; the listing warns there may be no snow, especially in summer. If weather or low numbers stop the flight, you are offered another day or another trip, or a full refund.

Choosing a Helicopter Trip
Is the Helicopter Worth It for Milford Sound?
What the flight lands on, heli-cruise against flight-only, the cost against a plane, and the weather, passenger and seat rules each listing states.
A helicopter is the most expensive way to see Milford Sound from Queenstown, and the only one that lands you on a glacier or a mountain site on the way. Queenstown to Milford is about 70 km in a straight line, against a 600 km, 12- to 14-hour return drive. Five trips on this page do it by helicopter, run by two operators: Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters and The Helicopter Line Queenstown.
What the flight is like
Every trip here leaves Queenstown and lands at least twice. The first landing is Milford Sound itself. On the flight-only trips that is a short stop: Glacier Southern Lakes describes a short nature walk and the Mitre Peak photo, and The Helicopter Line gives you 15 minutes on the ground. The second is on a glacier or at an alpine site. The Helicopter Line calls its spot a remote alpine location “with a high likelihood of snow”. Glacier Southern Lakes promises a glacier or alpine landing and adds that there may be no snow, especially in summer. One reviewer from China wrote of the two-hour flight: “Actually not glacier landing, more like alpine landing. We landed on the mountain top covering with snow.”
Only the extended trip lands a third time: on a West Coast beach looking out at the Tasman Sea, after flying the length of the fiord, which the operator puts at 16 km. No listing here offers a landing at a waterfall; the waterfalls are seen from the air and, on the heli-cruises, from the boat.
Heli-cruise or flight-only
The two heli-cruises take four hours. Glacier Southern Lakes’ cruise and alpine tour lands you in Milford for a scenic cruise, then lands on a glacier or alpine site on the way back. The Helicopter Line’s cruise with helicopter transfer states the times: 40 minutes’ flying each way and a two-hour cruise, then a remote alpine landing before Queenstown. It includes hotel pickup and the landing and concession fees, but not food or drinks.
The three flight-only trips trade the boat for more landings and less time. The extended flight with three landings takes 2.5 hours. The scenic flight with landing takes two hours; its includes list says 1.5 to 2 hours. The Helicopter Line’s 1.5-hour tour with two landings adds up to 90 minutes of flying on its own itinerary.
| Tour | From | Rating (reviews) | Length | Landings | Cruise |

| Cruise with Helicopter Transfer (The Helicopter Line) | $953 | 5.0 (34) | 4 hours | Milford Sound; remote alpine | Yes, 2 hours |
| Extended Flight & 3 Landings (Glacier Southern Lakes) | $894 | 4.9 (40) | 2.5 hours | Milford Sound; West Coast beach; glacier or alpine | No |
| Scenic Flight with Landing (Glacier Southern Lakes) | $838 | 5.0 (14) | 2 hours | Milford Sound; glacier or alpine | No |
| 1.5-Hour Tour with Two Landings (The Helicopter Line) | $784 | 4.8 (11) | 1.5 hours | Milford Sound (15 minutes); remote alpine | No |
Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
All five prices are per person. The review counts are smaller than for the coach or boat trips. The featured day has 200; the 14 and 11 behind the two shortest flights are a small sample, so read their ratings as an early signal rather than a settled score.
What the money buys
Fly-cruise-fly days by small plane from Queenstown run from $433 to $469 per person on our scenic flights page, and take four to five hours. The heli-cruises cost roughly twice that for the same four hours. The plane listings show glaciers from the air. None of them lists a glacier landing; the helicopter adds one, or an alpine landing, and The Helicopter Line’s two trips cap the group at six. A reviewer from Australia described his route: “not just through valleys but over the highest peaks and into dead end gorges to spiral up.”
For the cruise alone, the Milford Sound cruise page starts at $81, and a coach and cruise day from Queenstown starts at $149. If you want the fiord on foot as well, see walks and the Milford Track.
For a first visit with one day in Queenstown, the heli-cruise is the one to book: you get the fiord from the water and the glacier landing, back in four hours.

See this tour →Weather and minimum passengers
Rain is common in Fiordland, and every listing here says the flight depends on the weather. All five also need a minimum number of passengers. The two operators word it differently.
Glacier Southern Lakes (the featured day, the extended flight and the scenic flight): if it cannot fly “due to adverse weather or do not reach the required minimum numbers”, it will offer to move you to another day or an alternative experience where available, and a full refund if neither suits. Your final confirmation comes only once the minimum is met and a departure time is agreed. It also says flight paths and landing sites can change at the pilot’s discretion.
The Helicopter Line (the cruise with transfer and the 1.5-hour tour): if weather cancels the flight, you get “the option of an alternative date or full refund”; if the minimum is not met, the option to move to another departure or a full refund. Routes and landings may vary with the weather.
All five allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. One reviewer from Australia wrote that his Sunday flight “got cancelled due to poor weather” and the operator “quickly found a spot for me the following day”. Keep a spare day in Queenstown if you can; the weather and cancellations guide explains how to plan around it.
Seats, children and what to wear
The Helicopter Line’s two listings state the seat rule: children aged 4 to 14 and over 15 kg need their own seat; infants under 4 and under 15 kg sit on an adult’s knee. They ask for sturdy closed-toe shoes, warm clothing and sunglasses, and do not allow selfie sticks, drones or tablets. Its heli-cruise is listed as not suitable for people with mobility impairments.
The Glacier Southern Lakes listings give no seat or weight rule; they ask for sunglasses and a camera and ban smoking, drones and selfie sticks. None of the five states an adult weight limit, so ask the operator when you book if it matters to you.
Who it suits
The helicopter suits a traveller with little time in Queenstown, a budget for one large day, and a wish to stand on a glacier or a snowy ridge above Fiordland. Pick a heli-cruise if you also want the fiord from the water. Pick a flight-only trip if the landings matter more than the boat. What Guests Say
"Truly a once in a lifetime experience. Would have loved the Milford Sound cruise go further out into the Tasman Sea, to truly appreciate the magnificence of the west coast but it was the glacier landing and Fiordland flyover I was holding out for. Worth every cent and definitely an on the fly decision I will never forget. From the moment I was picked up by Jake, followed by Jeremy flying the group around, I could not have asked for a better time."
"The boat tour through Milford sound was amazing. However, the helicopter flight to and from Milford sound and landing on top of the glacier were absolutely amazing! Once in a lifetime experience we will never forget."
"I knew I was in for something special but it exceeded my expectations! Absolute bucket list activity. I was tight for time and driving to Milford Sound with a boat trip and drive home would take 12 hours or more. The helicopter trip to Milford Sound, including the boat trip, landing on a glacier, then landing back at Queenstown took 4.5 hours and freed up my afternoon for more activities. I was scheduled for a Sunday morning flight but it got cancelled due to poor weather but Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters quickly found a spot for me the following day as they operate 3 or 4 helicopters, giving them flexibility. If you’re considering this activity, don’t hesitate. It’s worth every dollar! One word - breathtaking. Highlight was taking off from the glacier and immediately flying over a 2000m+ drop to the valley below."
"We had so much fun! Alphie our pilot was great, and we saw baby penguins, dolphins and seals. Only issue is we waited 40 minutes for another couple who were late, and it ate into our time - otherwise was perfect!"
"We had a great guide who also made sure that everyone could sit in the front once. We were also very lucky, because not only were the conditions good for landing on a glacier, but we could also see dolphins and seals on the boat tour. My tip: The dolphins were swimming in front of the ship, so you can see them best if you stand on the platform in front of the skipper!"
"This was an unforgettable experience and the highlight of my trip to New Zealand. The pilot was professional, friendly, and provided excellent explanations throughout the tour. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, with incredible views of mountains, glaciers, and Milford Sound. Landing on the glacier and experiencing the snow up close was truly magical. Everything was perfectly organized, and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Queenstown. Thank you for an amazing adventure!"
"Without a doubt, this was the most incredible experience! Jeremy was extremely knowledgeable and clearly a very experienced pilot. The scenery was breathtaking, perfect weather, no clouds or wind, we had dolphins surf along the boat on Milford Sound and the glacier landing experience like no other. Highly recommend this company and tour."
