Milford Sound in Bad Weather: Cancellations, Refunds and Rain
What rain, cloud and wind do to a Milford Sound trip: cruises run in rain, flights depend on the weather, and what each listing offers if yours cannot go.
Rain rarely stops a Milford Sound cruise, and many visitors think it improves the view; it is the flights and helicopters that the weather can cancel. Nearly every tour on this site can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before (the overnight cruise needs 14 days), and most flight listings say what happens if the weather keeps them on the ground.
Rain and the cruise
The listings are frank about the weather. RealNZ tells you to “always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall”, and Southern Discoveries adds that “rainfall creates dozens of temporary waterfalls that cascade down the cliff faces”. Cheeky Kiwi Travel calls Milford Sound weather “unpredictable” and asks you to bring layers and a waterproof or windproof jacket. What rain can do is hide the peaks in cloud. Southern Discoveries also says its cruises “may be cancelled due to unsafe weather or maintenance”, and the overnight cruise goes out to the Tasman Sea “weather permitting”.
Flights: what each listing says
| Tour | If the weather stops the flight |
|---|---|
| Milford Sound Scenic Flights, plane and boat | Reschedule to another trip, or cancel for a full refund |
| Air Milford, flight and nature cruise | If it is rescheduled for weather, you can choose a full refund; the operator advises booking on your first day in Queenstown |
| Mitre Peak Cruises, coach out and fly back | If the flight back is cancelled, you return to Queenstown by coach with a partial refund for the flight |
| The Helicopter Line, cruise with heli transfer | An alternative date or a full refund |
| Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters | Transfer to another day or another experience; if neither suits, a full refund |

Several flight listings also need a minimum number of passengers; if it is not met, they offer another departure or a full refund. Routes and landing spots can change on the day at the pilot’s discretion.
The road
DOC says snow chains may be required on the Milford Road from May to September, and that the stretch between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm is an avalanche area where you may not stop. NZTA posts the road’s status, and there are signs at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford. If you are driving yourself, check before you leave; see driving to Milford Sound.
How to plan around it
- If you want to fly, book it for an early day of your stay so there is room to move it, as Air Milford advises.
- If the forecast is poor, a coach-and-cruise day is the safe choice: it runs in rain. See coach and cruise.
- Pack for rain and cold whatever the season.
Natural hazards
RealNZ’s listings note that Milford Sound “is in an area with inherent natural risk, including potential earthquakes and landslide-induced tsunami”, and link to their natural hazard page. That is a standing note, not a warning about a particular day. See the cruise page for the boats and scenic flights for the flights.
