Milford Sound From Queenstown or From Te Anau?
Milford Sound from Queenstown is a 12-hour coach day; from Te Anau about 7.5 to 8 hours. Distances, the tours from each town, and when the extra night pays off.
Te Anau makes the shorter, easier day: its coach-and-cruise tours run about 7.5 to 8 hours, against about 11 to 13 hours from Queenstown. Queenstown wins if you have no night to spare, or if you want to fly, because the scenic flights and helicopters leave from there.
The distances
DOC puts the return trip from Te Anau to Milford at 240 km, about an eight-hour day with stops, short walks and a cruise, and from Queenstown at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours. It recommends making the trip from Te Anau. There is no fuel or shop between Te Anau and Milford.

The Queenstown coaches stop in Te Anau anyway, for a break of about 30 minutes, then take the Milford Road through the Eglinton Valley and the Homer Tunnel. From Te Anau you start on that road.
When the extra night pays off
If you would otherwise spend 12 hours on a coach, a night in Te Anau buys you about four hours back and a less tiring day. It also puts you closer to the walks: the Te Anau days with walking, and the Milford Track, start from there. See walks and the Milford Track.
When Queenstown is the better base
If you have one free day, no car and no night to spare, the Queenstown coach is the simplest answer. If you have the budget, fly instead: the scenic flights and helicopters leave from Queenstown, and a fly-cruise-fly trip takes about four to five hours.
Before you book
Check whether your tour collects from your hotel or a central stop, and confirm the pickup time the operator sends after booking. The coach and cruise page compares the lunch, the coach and the cruise length.
