Driving to Milford Sound Yourself

Driving to Milford Sound on the Milford Road: distances from Te Anau and Queenstown, no fuel after Te Anau, winter chains, the Homer Tunnel, parking and booking a cruise.

Updated October 2026

You can drive to Milford Sound yourself on State Highway 94 from Te Anau, then book only the cruise. DOC’s figures: Te Anau to Milford and back is 240 km, an eight-hour day with stops and a cruise; Queenstown and back is 600 km and 12 to 14 hours, which DOC recommends against.

What DOC tells drivers

  • There are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Start with a full tank and bring food and drinks.
  • In winter, May to September, chains may be required. You can rent them in Te Anau; learn to fit them before you go.
  • Between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm you may not stop: it is an avalanche area.
  • The Homer Tunnel, finished in 1953, is 1.2 km long at 945 m above sea level and drops steeply toward Milford. In summer peaks, traffic lights can add up to 20 minutes.
  • Check the road before you leave: NZTA posts the Milford Road (SH94) status, and there are signs at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford.

Parking and fees

There is no fee to visit Milford Sound in 2026, but parking near the cruise terminal is charged. A bill introduced in May 2026 proposes an entry charge for international visitors, with reporting putting it no earlier than summer 2027.

Booking the cruise

Book the boat before you set off, and leave time: the drive from Te Anau is about two hours without stops, and the tour operators’ own coaches take about three with stops. Most cruises take about 1.5 to 2 hours. The cruise page compares small boats, catamarans and the overnight cruise.

When a coach makes more sense

If you are not used to mountain roads, winter driving or long days at the wheel, a coach does the driving and stops at the same places. From Te Anau the coach day is about 7.5 to 8 hours. See coach and cruise.
