The Best Way to See Milford Sound, by Your Trip

The best way to see Milford Sound depends on where you stay and what you spend: coach and cruise, a cruise you drive to, fly-cruise-fly, a helicopter or a walk.

Updated October 2026

For a first visit without a car, the best way is the coach-and-cruise day, from Te Anau if you can stay a night there and from Queenstown if you cannot. If time matters more than money and the forecast is good, fly from Queenstown instead. If you are driving yourself, book only the cruise.

If you are based in Queenstown

You have two real choices: a long coach day or a flight. DOC puts the Queenstown return by road at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours. The coach tours split that with a break in Te Anau and photo stops on the Milford Road, so the day is long but not just driving. A fly-cruise-fly trip crosses the mountains in about 40 minutes each way and takes about four to five hours, at about three times the price. Coach and cruise and scenic flights compare the tours.

If you can stay in Te Anau

Do it. Te Anau is about two hours from Milford, and the Te Anau coach days run about 7.5 to 8 hours. DOC itself recommends returning to Milford from Te Anau rather than from Queenstown. Queenstown or Te Anau has the detail.

If you are driving

Book only the boat and drive to the terminal on State Highway 94. There is no fuel after Te Anau, chains may be required from May to September, and parking near the terminal is charged. Driving to Milford Sound covers the road; the cruise page compares the boats.

If you want to walk

A day from Te Anau with short walks and a cruise, or a day walk on the last stretch of the Milford Track, adds a few hours on foot. The four-day Great Walk is booked through DOC, not here. Walks and the Milford Track explains the difference.
